A good friend of mine once said that technology companies are like a prison guard, and the guards are the ones that have to give the warning to the prisoners about what is going to happen.

As a society, we tend to think that we’re all equal and that we each have our own set of “technology gaps.” You know, the thing that we don’t consider as a given that other people would, and that’s like when you’re a kid and you see something that you thought was normal on a road you never used to drive on, but it turns out that’s a railroad track.

Well, in a way, there is a good reason that companies should have a set of technology gaps. The reason is that, in a lot of ways, they are the only ones that can handle a lot of the responsibility and the stress of keeping the world running. But they should still get a degree of autonomy, so they can decide what the technology gaps are of their own.
